Surgery for cryptorchidism and hypospadias in boys under 7 years of age in France (1998–2008).

Introduction - Cryptorchidism and hypospadias are congenital malformations of the male urogenital tract. An increase in their incidence has been reported, and a link to exposure to endocrine disruptors has been suggested. Materials and Methods - The PMSI, a national database of hospitalizations, was analyzed for the period 1998–2008 in mainland France and from 2000 onward in the French overseas departments to track trends in surgical procedures for cryptorchidism and hypospadias in boys under 7 years of age. Results - The rate of surgical procedures for cryptorchidism is 2.51 per 1,000 boys under 7 years of age per year in mainland France and 1.42 in the French overseas departments, with respective annual increases of 1.8% and 4%. For hypospadias, this rate is 1.10 per 1,000 boys per year in mainland France and increases annually by 1.2%. In the French overseas departments, it is 0.65 per 1,000, with no significant increase. Regional variations cannot be explained by this descriptive analysis and are not comparable between the two congenital malformations. Conclusion - The increase in surgical intervention rates may indicate a rise in the incidence of these conditions, but it may also reflect changes in medical practices or PMSI coding over time, or a combination of these factors.
