In Martinique, the number of participants in Mois Sans Tabac increased by 77% between 2017 and 2018. This number represents 1.4% of daily smokers registered in 2018. Between 2017 and 2018, the number of calls to 39 89 more than doubled: male callers were overrepresented (52%), and those aged 55 and older accounted for 68% of callers.
The number of smoking cessation kits ordered increased by 53% between 2017 and 2018. Nearly all of the island’s 143 pharmacies were covered by the 2018 Smoke-Free Month campaign.
In 2015, the total number of deaths attributable to smoking was estimated at 138 (95% CI: 130–148), representing 4.5% of all deaths recorded that year in the region. This rate is nearly three times lower than that of France as a whole in the same year (13%).
The proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was 6.1% among men and 3.0% among women in Martinique, compared to 19.3% and 6.9% in France as a whole. Smoking is responsible for a significant proportion of premature deaths (deaths occurring before the age of 65): 7% of deaths were attributed to smoking before this age, with this proportion being higher among men (9%) than among women (5%).
Chronic respiratory diseases (15%) and cancers (15%) are the leading causes of smoking-related deaths among men. Among women, chronic respiratory diseases (12%) and infections (7%) are the leading causes of smoking-related deaths.
