Changes in food consumption in the Suvimax study, 1995–2002

Nutrition plays a major role in the development of many chronic diseases. In this context, the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS, 2001) has as its overall objective the improvement of the health status of the entire population by addressing one of its major determinants: nutrition. This article presents changes between 1995 and 2002 in the dietary intake of participants in the SU.VI.MAX study, by food category, as defined in the PNNS dietary guidelines disseminated to the general public. The analyses showed that this population generally deviated from the PNNS dietary guidelines. Only the frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption and the average intake of added fats showed signs of improvement. These findings underscore the importance of such a public health initiative in France.
