Health studies conducted around the Gilly-sur-Isère incinerator, France.

The household waste incineration plant in Gilly-sur-Isère was shut down in October 2001 following measurements of very high dioxin concentrations in emissions, at a time when the local population was concerned about the number of cancer cases in the vicinity of the facility. In this context, four health studies were launched in 2002: a health risk assessment, a study of dioxin levels in breast milk, a study of cancer mortality, and a study of cancer incidence. The results of these studies were consistent and showed no observable effect of the incinerator on the health of the local population. (R.A.)
