Missions

The Antilles Regional Unit, in partnership with a consortium of stakeholders (Madininair,
Gwad’air, the Regional Health Agencies of Martinique and Guadeloupe, IRSET-Inserm,
the University Hospitals of Guadeloupe and Martinique, LISA, and IMT Nord Europe) was selected as a winner of the ANR’s Sargassum III call
for proposals with its project titled SAGES: Sargassum, Analysis of
Emitted Gases and Particles, and Health Impacts in the French Antilles. The project’s objective is to improve understanding of the health impacts associated with chronic exposure to decomposing Sargassum seaweed in order to better protect the populations of Guadeloupe and Martinique. This four-year project has just begun and comprises three work packages: WP1 on characterizing exposure to gases emitted by Sargassum, WP2 on the health impacts of exposure to gases emitted by Sargassum, and WP3 on prevention measures. In WP2, Santé publique France is conducting a perceived health study comparing exposed and unexposed groups among 3,000 individuals in Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The main objective of this perceived health study is to assess the health status of the general population exposed to emissions from Sargassum seaweed in the French West Indies.
