Launched in 2018, Nutri-Score is a nutritional labeling system designed to encourage consumers to choose products that are healthier from a nutritional standpoint. Three years after its launch, 53% of French people surveyed say it has influenced their product choices, and 51% find it easy to understand. To encourage greater use of the logo during shopping and improve understanding of it, Santé publique France is launching an information campaign for the general public on July 5 that will be visible on social media, in stores, and in healthcare facilities.

Nutri-Score: Room for Further Growth

The market share of brands participating in the Nutri-Score program has steadily increased since 2018, reaching 50% of sales volume in 20201. According to the latest study conducted by Santé publique France in 20202, 53% of respondents believe that Nutri-Score has influenced their purchasing behavior. More specifically, it has prompted:

  • 39% of consumers to switch brands for the same product (+16 percentage points compared to May 2019)

  • 36% to choose a product with a better score over another within the same aisle (+12 points)

  • 34% to limit their purchases of products with lower scores (+11 points) 35% to make lasting changes to certain eating habits (+10 points)

Nutri-Score enjoys excellent brand recognition, and its presence in stores is growing rapidly. The number of brands displaying the logo is increasing, and it is beginning to appear in company cafeterias. Nevertheless, public adoption can still improve, and we aim to foster a genuine habit of using it. That is why we are launching a campaign today to answer the most frequently asked questions and remind people how to use Nutri-Score,” comments Anne-Juliette Serry, head of the Food and Physical Activity Unit at Santé publique France.

A campaign to improve understanding and use of Nutri-Score

To ensure that Nutri-Score fulfills its role fully, Santé publique France is launching a new educational campaign today in the form of videos and an informational brochure. These tools provide answers to frequently asked questions and, more broadly, offer guidance on how to easily incorporate Nutri-Score into daily life.

The campaign consists of a digital initiative targeting 18- to 49-year-olds, featuring four 30-second videos shared on social media (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat): a video titled “How to Eat Better at a Glance?” explaining how to use Nutri-Score while grocery shopping, and three videos addressing questions frequently asked by consumers:

Medical facilities will also display the educational video explaining how to use Nutri-Score on screens in waiting rooms, along with the brochure.

Additionally, the campaign includes a digital display component in hypermarkets, supermarkets, and convenience stores nationwide to encourage consumers to use the Nutri-Score when making purchases.

The brochure and videos will be available on the mangerbouger.fr website. As a reminder, this site, created by Santé publique France, offers numerous tools and resources to help everyone better understand and incorporate the recommendations of the National Nutrition and Health Plan.

What is Nutri-Score used for?

As a supplement to dietary guidelines, Nutri-Score lets you compare:

  • products in the same aisle: breakfast cereals, for example, can have a score ranging from A to E. At a glance, you can choose, from among your favorite cereals, those with the best nutritional quality,

  • the same product from different brands: Bolognese lasagna, for example, can be rated A, B, C, or even D depending on the brand,

  • products eaten on the same occasion: as an appetizer, main course, dessert, breakfast, or snack. For example, for dessert, you can compare a chocolate mousse with a fruit yogurt or crème caramel.
