In Week 39 (September 23–29), total emergency department visits and hospitalizations following visits remained stable across all age groups, except among 2- to 14-year-olds, where there was a slight decrease (down 4%, or 3,166 visits, and down 6%, or 283 hospitalizations, respectively).

Following a major increase in Week 38, the past week saw a more moderate rise in seasonal indicators for respiratory conditions, with:

  • asthma in adults (+6%, or +62 visits), with an increase in hospitalizations following visits among those aged 75 and older over the past two weeks (66% in Week 39 vs. 44% in Week 37);

  • acute bronchitis in all age groups except those under 2 years of age (+14%, or +139 visits among adults, and +17%, or +34 visits among 2- to 14-year-olds);

Among children under 2 years of age, visits for bronchiolitis stabilized in Week 39.
Also noted is an increase in visits for conjunctivitis among adults (+9%, or +58 visits), gastroenteritis among 2- to 14-year-olds (+6%, or +84 visits), and viral meningitis across all age groups (+91%, or +20 visits).

Among the most common conditions, there was an increase in visits for chest pain among adults (+8%) and, among those aged 75 and older, an increase in visits for cardiac decompensation (+12%) and dyspnea/respiratory failure (+11%).
