For more than 30 years, the Santé publique France Barometer has been a one-of-a-kind survey that measures and tracks the health behaviors, perceptions, and opinions of people living in France. The 2024 edition breaks new ground by presenting all indicators at the regional level. This regional perspective allows us to look beyond national trends to better understand the specific dynamics of each region and thus effectively support local stakeholders.

While indicators in the Centre-Val de Loire region generally follow national trends, the results nevertheless reveal certain regional characteristics. Some appear more favorable than average—lower vaccine hesitancy among women, better mental health (depressive episodes, suicidal thoughts), and less sedentary lifestyles—while others reveal vulnerabilities, particularly regarding certain chronic diseases and cardiovascular risk factors.

The Santé publique France 2024 Barometer, a strategic tool for regional stakeholders

By providing precise benchmarks on the population’s health status, the 2024 Barometer allows us to better understand the specific challenges facing the Centre-Val de Loire region. It stands out as an indispensable tool for supporting preventive actions, reducing inequalities, and promoting health for all.

Esra Morvan, Regional Representative for Centre-Val de Loire, Santé publique France

This survey reveals trends that should guide public policy and prevention efforts in the Centre-Val de Loire region:

The proportion of daily smokers is decreasing, demonstrating the effectiveness of prevention efforts and support for quitting.
However, inequalities remain significant, with a higher prevalence of smoking among people in precarious situations or with low levels of education.

  • Alcohol and vaping: trends to monitor in a changing landscape

Nearly one in five adults exceeds the guidelines for low-risk alcohol consumption.
At the same time, daily vaping continues to rise, particularly among young adults, calling for strengthened support and harm-reduction strategies.

  • Physical activity and sedentary lifestyles: a balance to be strengthened

While the majority of residents report engaging in physical activity, sedentary lifestyles remain prevalent, particularly among working-age adults and seniors.
These findings underscore the importance of promoting physical activity in all settings and integrating it as an essential component of well-being.

  • Mental health: a cross-cutting prevention issue

Indicators of psychological well-being reveal vulnerabilities, particularly among young adults and women.
They call for the development of a comprehensive prevention approach that integrates mental health, health behaviors, and social conditions.

A unique observatory to understand and influence the population’s health behaviors

With 35,000 respondents, including nearly 1,500 in the Centre-Val de Loire region, this survey is an indispensable tool for guiding public health prevention and information policies.

The 2024 edition marks a new milestone in understanding the population’s health status by offering, for the first time, a detailed analysis at the regional level. This survey, recognized for its public interest and statistical quality, provides information that cannot be collected otherwise, particularly regarding individual behaviors, opinions, knowledge, and certain health events not captured by existing surveillance systems. The 2024 edition collects data on 20 major public health issues (15 presented for 2025 and 5 in March 2026): tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, sleep, vaccination uptake, mental health…

Now updated every two years, this data reveals current health and social trends and thus provides the information needed to develop and evaluate public health policies.

Beyond the indicators, the Santé publique France Barometer highlights the influence of living conditions, social factors, and local environments on residents’ health. It also underscores the critical role of prevention, whether in the areas of mental health, substance use, health-promoting behaviors, or adaptation to the effects of climate change.
