SOS Médecins National Newsletter, August 8, 2022

Key Points

In Week 31 (August 1–7, 2022), total activity at SOS Médecins clinics declined among children (-7%, or 1,380 fewer procedures), remained stable among those aged 15–44, and increased among adults aged 75 and older (+9%, or 582 more procedures).

Medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 declined for the fourth consecutive week: a total of 3,419 procedures (vs. 4,376 procedures in Week 30) were recorded across all age groups (a 22% decrease in Week 31 vs. a 22% decrease in Week 30). This decline applies to all age groups. Nevertheless, these procedures remain the second most frequent across all age groups. At the regional level, SOS Médecins medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 are down in all regions except Martinique, where they are up slightly (+20%, or +11 procedures).

Since monitoring began on March 3, 2020, 435,886 medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 have been performed.

Additionally, in connection with the heat wave, there has been an increase in cases of heatstroke (+60% across all age groups, or +28 cases), dehydration among adults aged 75 and older (+71%, or +42 cases), and general malaise among adults aged 15 and older (+10%, or +23 cases).

Among other indicators, there was an increase in cases of anxiety among children (+58%, or +7 cases) and chickenpox among children under 2 years of age (+20%, or +27 cases).

Among adults aged 75 and older, the increase in activity—likely linked to the reduced availability of primary care services due to the holidays—affects most of the conditions most frequently diagnosed by SOS Médecins.
