Mental Health Syndromic Surveillance Bulletin, February 22, 2021
Summary
Over the past three weeks (S05 and S07, i.e., February 1–21, 2021).
Data on emergency department visits from the Oscour® network
Among adults aged 15 and older, visits for suicidal behavior, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders are at levels comparable to or even lower than those of the past two years.
Among children under 15, there was an increase in visits due to suicide attempts in Week 5 (+16%, or 23 more visits compared to the previous week), a trend already observed in Week 4 (+23% compared to Week 3), followed by a decrease in Weeks 6 and 7 (–7% and –22%, respectively). In Week 07, the number of admissions for suicide attempts reached 119 and was comparable to those of the previous two years. We also note that admissions for mood disorders (including depressive disorders) have remained on an upward trend over the past few weeks, at a level 2 to 3 times higher than in previous years.
For these two indicators, further investigations showed that the age group involved was 11–17 years old, and more specifically 11–14 years old. The increase in visits for suicidal acts was particularly associated with diagnoses of drug overdose.
Data on medical procedures from the SOS Médecins associations
Medical procedures for anxiety have remained stable over the past few weeks but remain at a higher level than those observed over the past two years.
Procedures for depressive states remained stable at a level higher than in the previous two years across all age groups, with the exception of those aged 65 and older. Among the latter, an increase was observed in S06 (+24%, or +11 procedures), which continued at a more moderate pace in S07 (+5%, or +3 procedures). The levels reached, however, remained within the fluctuation ranges observed in recent weeks.
Procedures for behavioral disorders were stable and within the usual fluctuation ranges for all age groups, except among people aged 65 and older, among whom they remained stable at a level nearly twice that of the past two years.
