Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of October 27, 2014.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
To date, in the absence of recent data from the Oscour® network and given that the number of acute diarrhea consultations among sentinel physicians remains higher than the 2010–2013 seasonal averages, we cannot conclude that the outbreak has ended. Nevertheless, the number of cases has declined sharply over the past several weeks, and the situation is approaching the seasonal values typically observed for this period. As a reminder, the epidemic was identified in early August. The epidemic peak was observed in week 33 (August 11–17) in the CHM emergency department and in consultations with sentinel network physicians. At pharmacies in the sentinel network, the peak in sales of anti-diarrheal medications occurred 15 days later (August 25–31). This outbreak particularly affected children under 5 years of age. Although various viruses were identified, the analyses conducted (National Reference Center for Enteric Viruses) revealed that rotavirus was the predominant cause.
