Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of October 14, 2014.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
An outbreak of gastroenteritis has been detected in Mayotte since early August, with a peak in week 33 (August 11–17) in the CHM emergency department and during consultations with doctors in the sentinel network. In pharmacies within the sentinel network, the peak occurred 15 days later (August 25–31). To date, the number of gastroenteritis cases has dropped significantly. For the past two weeks, the number of visits to the CHM emergency department for gastroenteritis, regardless of age, as well as sales of anti-diarrheal medications at sentinel pharmacies, have been at levels close to those observed outside of an epidemic. For physicians in the sentinel network, the number of consultations for acute diarrhea among children under 5 has also been within the 2010–2013 seasonal averages since the previous week (September 29–October 5) (subject to data consolidation).Initial analyses have identified rotavirus as the predominant pathogen. Further analyses and strain typing are currently underway to compare the strains circulating in Mayotte and Réunion, where a rotavirus outbreak is still ongoing.
