Status of Acute Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of November 13, 2014.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) affecting primarily children under 5 years of age was identified in Mayotte in early August. Although various viruses were isolated, analyses conducted (National Reference Center for Enteric Viruses) revealed that the majority of cases were caused by rotavirus. By early November, AGE activity in the CHM emergency department had remained low for five consecutive weeks (an average of 12 visits per week compared to 147 during the peak in week 33).Nevertheless, the number of acute diarrhea consultations (among children under 5) at sentinel clinics remained above the 2010–2013 seasonal averages, and it is not yet possible to conclude that the epidemic has ended. However, the number of cases has declined sharply over the past several weeks, and the situation is approaching the seasonal values typically observed for this time of year.
