Key Points
Monitoring of emergency department visits for psychological reasons (all types combined) showed no significant increase coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic or the preventive measures implemented (lockdown/curfew).
Among children, the number of visits for psychological disorders (all types combined) rose sharply (+70%) in January–February 2022 compared to the same period the previous year.
The lowest rate of visits for suicidal acts was observed in May–June 2021, with 0.9 visits for suicidal acts per 1,000 visits among those aged 11 and older, whereas this rate ranged between 2.5 and 3 per 1,000 during other periods of the year
In 2021, 18- to 24-year-olds represented the age group with the highest number of emergency department visits for suicide attempts (more than one-third of all suicide attempts seen in the emergency department) and for anxiety disorders (27% of visits)
Among visits for suicidal acts and anxiety disorders in 2021, children accounted for a significant number, representing nearly a quarter of visits for suicidal acts and 10% of visits for anxiety disorders
