Malaria Surveillance in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of March 30, 2021.
Key Points
Between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, 79 cases of malaria were reported to the Health Surveillance and Safety Unit (VSS) of the Mayotte Regional Health Agency (ARS). Of these cases, 7 were locally acquired.
Of the 7 locally acquired cases, 3 were located in the Central zone (2 others in Greater Mamoudzou, 1 in the North, and 1 in the South).
With 54 reported cases, the 2019 reporting rate exceeded all reporting rates observed since 2014, but the incidence of locally acquired cases remained very low (0.015 cases per 1,000 inhabitants).
In 2014, according to the WHO, Mayotte officially entered the malaria elimination phase.
Maintaining malaria control policies is essential to keep transmission rates low in Mayotte.
