Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Update as of August 11, 2020.

Key Points

  • Slowdown in viral circulation (43 confirmed cases during weeks 30 and 31 of 2020): transition to an inter-epidemic phase.

  • Since January 1, 2020: 15,800 cases have been confirmed and more than 34,000 cases estimated; 19 deaths have been recorded.

  • Nearly all of the island’s municipalities (20 out of 24) remain affected by viral circulation: the west and south of the island report the most cases, but cases remain widely dispersed across the island’s four sectors.

  • The DENV1 serotype remains by far the most prevalent. DENV2 is now detected sporadically and ubiquitously, while DENV3 has been detected in the east, north, and west.

  • Severe, delayed ophthalmological manifestations are being reported some time after the onset of dengue symptoms.

  • Laboratory confirmation of all suspected or clinically suggestive cases of dengue (both autochthonous and imported) is recommended in order to identify as quickly as possible any new cases that could lead to the establishment of a transmission chain, to implement management measures, and, if necessary, to strengthen surveillance among physicians in the affected area.
