99 deaths
Since the beginning of the year, Mayotte has been facing a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic amid the circulation of the 20J/501Y.V2 variant identified in South Africa. A total of 10,621 new cases have been recorded since January 1, 2021. A peak was reached in Week 6 of 2021 with 2,442 new cases detected that week.
Over the past three weeks, a stabilization in the number of new cases detected has been observed alongside a decrease in the testing rate. The positivity rate stabilized between Week 6 and Week 7. The reproduction rate (Reff), calculated as of February 24, is decreasing, indicating a possible slowdown in the epidemic.
The indicators point to a stabilization of viral circulation, likely linked to the reduction in social interactions resulting from the lockdown in effect for the past three weeks. However, the incidence rate (842 cases per 100,000 residents) and the positivity rate (29%) remain at very high levels, underscoring the need to maintain efforts to combat the epidemic at both the collective and individual levels.
