Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of July 24, 2025.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Over the past two weeks, dengue activity in the territory has been low, with a total of 5 confirmed cases, all in S28. These cases were reported in the three coastal sectors. The identified serotype is exclusively DENV-2.

  • Since the beginning of the year, 237 cases of dengue have been confirmed in French Guiana, an average of 8 per week. Of these, 126 were from the Savanes sector, 48 from the Western Littoral, 27 from Cayenne Island, 9 from Maroni, 1 from the Eastern Interior sector; the location was undetermined for 20 cases, and 6 were residents outside French Guiana. Of the 166 samples serotyped, 98% were DENV-2.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remained low, with 5 cases (2 in S28 and 3 in S29, vs. 8 in total in S26 and S27). These 5 cases were caused by P. vivax (no relapses).

  • In total, 99 malaria cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity declined between January and June (from 27 to 13 cases per month) and has tended to stabilize in July (9 cases). Since the beginning of the year, infections have occurred primarily in gold-mining areas.

Acute respiratory infections (influenza, bronchiolitis, and COVID-19)

  • The flu epidemic remains in a downward phase. The level of viral circulation was high over the past two weeks, particularly along the coast.

  • Activity related to bronchiolitis was high, particularly in the West, marking the start of the outbreak in the region.

  • COVID-19-related activity was low in emergency departments and community health centers/local hospitals over the past two weeks.

Diarrhea

  • Activity was moderate and slightly declining in community health centers and local hospitals, and stable in the emergency departments of the three hospitals.
