COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of June 24, 2021
Key Points
One month after the peak reached in French Guiana, the incidence rate of confirmed cases has resumed its decline, falling by 16% over the course of a week. Data from the past few days is also encouraging. The testing rate also increased in week 24, with the positivity rate dropping by 2 percentage points to 10%.
As of June 22, 2021, the effective reproduction number (R) for cases was 0.93, remaining significantly below 1. At the regional level, a stabilization of the incidence rate has been confirmed on the island of Cayenne and in Savanes, while the number of new cases has decreased in the West for the first time (-20%). A first case of the Delta variant has been confirmed in French Guiana through sequencing. This is an imported case.
Hospitalizations and ICU admissions remained stable, with 87 hospitalizations in general wards. In the ICU, 21 admissions were reported. These hospital indicators lag behind the incidence of confirmed cases by about ten days. Emergency room visits were on the rise in the three hospitals in S24. The total number of deaths since March 2020 stands at 142.
Three clusters were reported last week in the workplace, prompting increased vigilance in this setting.
Vaccination is progressing, particularly among the most vulnerable: nearly 35% of those aged 50 to 74 have received a first vaccine dose, and more than 27% are now fully vaccinated. Vaccination prevents more than 90% of severe cases.
