What We Do
Epidemiological Surveillance of Malaria
Santé publique France analyzes and monitors trends in notifiable diseases, including malaria.
The purpose of the mandatory reporting system is to detect and report notifiable diseases in order to:
take action and prevent the risk of epidemics;
analyze trends in these diseases over time;
adapt public health policies to the needs of the population.
In mainland France, only cases of locally acquired malaria (contracted in mainland France) must be reported. Reported cases are investigated to confirm their local origin and, if necessary, trigger appropriate control measures.
Since 1985, surveillance of imported malaria cases has relied on a network of mainland parasitology laboratories, coordinated by the National Reference Center for Malaria. Based on the representativeness of this network, the annual number of cases, estimated by extrapolation, ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 imported malaria cases.
In the French overseas departments, cases of locally acquired or imported malaria must be reported in order to trigger control measures focused primarily on mosquito control around each case.
The Importance of Reporting
Physicians and laboratory professionals who diagnose a case of notifiable malaria must report it immediately and by any appropriate means (phone, fax, email) to the physician at the Regional Health Agency (ARS) in their area of practice. Thus, early reporting of a case of indigenous malaria allows for a rapid investigation to determine the source of transmission (maternal-fetal or transfusion-related transmission, proximity to an airport, vector-borne transmission, etc.) and, if necessary, to implement appropriate control measures.
It also allows for monitoring the spread of the disease over time and space and for coordinating an appropriate response, particularly through targeted vector control measures in the French overseas departments.
