Deaths from heart failure in France: trends from 2000 to 2010

Introduction: Heart failure is a condition that accounts for numerous hospitalizations in Western countries and has a very high mortality rate. The objective of this study was to estimate the annual death rate from heart failure in France and to analyze trends between 2000 and 2010. Methods: Data were extracted from the national databases on medical causes of death maintained by CépiDc. Rates were standardized to the 2006 French population, and trends were analyzed using Poisson regressions. Analyses were conducted for both single-cause (SC) and multiple-cause (MC) deaths. Results: In 2010, 23,882 deaths from heart failure were observed in the single-cause analysis and 72,809 in the multiple-cause analysis. The overall age-standardized mortality rate from heart failure was 31.1 per 100,000 people in the single-cause analysis and 96.8 per 100,000 in the multiple-cause analysis. The mortality rate decreased by 4% annually in CI and by 3.5% in CM between 2000 and 2010. Despite significant differences in mortality between CI and CM, their trends are similar. Discussion-Conclusion: Despite a significant reduction in mortality between 2000 and 2010, heart failure remains a common cause of death in France, particularly among the elderly, and constitutes a priority public health issue.
