Santé publique France: Scientific Knowledge for Better Health for All
Date of establishment: 2016
Status: public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Health
Missions: anticipate, understand, act
Staff: 596 employees (+ 44 under contract)
Budget: over €570 million
The year 2020 was, of course, defined by the management of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and thus by the full mobilization of the agency’s teams, including:
real-time monitoring and alerting regarding the epidemic (production of indicators at the finest territorial level, open data, analysis, and interpretation),
contributing to France’s vaccination strategy (purchasing and distributing vaccine doses, evaluating vaccination policy, providing reference information),
prevention to curb the spread of the virus (promotion of preventive measures, assessment of the impact of containment measures, publications for healthcare professionals and the general public),
the generation of new scientific knowledge, notably through the implementation of numerous surveys.
Very quickly, Santé publique France also turned its attention to the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis on the mental health of the French population. Studies were launched among the general population, such as Confeado (assessment of mental health among children and adolescents), CoviPrev (changes in mental health indicators and determinants), Covimater (behaviors and mental health of pregnant women during lockdown)...; as well as an awareness campaign on the risks of lockdown on mental health.
Alongside this crisis management framework, numerous issues required constant attention. Santé publique France thus continued its work in many areas: prevention of all health burdens, surveillance of both infectious and chronic diseases, conducting surveys, continuing our barometers, etc.
