Human papillomavirus infections

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The infection is usually asymptomatic and clears up within a few months. In some cases, the virus can persist and lead to anogenital cancers and cancers of the head and neck.

Our Missions

  • Assess the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination on HPV-related diseases

  • Monitoring vaccination coverage for HPV

  • Promote vaccination against human papillomavirus

  • Assess the burden of HPV-related cancers

  • Assess the performance of the national organized cervical cancer screening program

What We Do

Surveillance of Human Papillomavirus Infections

Santé publique France is responsible for monitoring vaccination coverage for HPV vaccines among adolescents and develops tools to inform and promote this vaccination among young girls and boys, their parents, and healthcare professionals.

Santé publique France is also responsible, in collaboration with the National Reference Center (CNR) for Papillomavirus, for HPV surveillance in the population (for example, through surveys of the general population or specific subgroups). Furthermore, the agency, in collaboration with its partners (FRANCIM, InCA), is responsible for estimating the burden of HPV-related cancers and evaluating the performance of the national organized cervical cancer screening program.

Prevention efforts against papillomavirus infections

Santé publique France helps promote vaccination through various tools (website, promotional campaigns, brochures, etc.). The website vaccination-info-service.fr is the go-to resource on vaccination, providing reliable and scientifically validated answers to questions the public and healthcare professionals may have on the subject.
A section dedicated to vaccination against human papillomavirus infections is available in two sections—one for the general public and the other for healthcare professionals—to better support them in their practice:

Santé publique France develops resources for healthcare professionals, including a simplified vaccination schedule and a vaccination brochure available in the “Tools” tab.
