Heat Wave and Health Alert System

  • A heat wave accompanied by an orange heat wave alert began on July 28 and ended on August 4. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Centre-Val de Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions, each of which had at least one department under an orange alert during this period, also hosted at least one Olympic event.

Syndromic Surveillance

Summary of trends in OSCOUR® and SOS Médecins indicators:

  • In line with weather conditions, there was a marked increase in cases of hyperthermia and heatstroke in emergency departments and at SOS Médecins clinics.

  • Emergency room visits and SOS Médecins consultations tagged as related to the Olympic Games were on the rise in Week 31 (vs. Week 30), the first week with events taking place every day. 93% of tagged emergency room visits and 47% of medical procedures tagged by SOS Médecins were in the Île-de-France region.

Mortality:

  • The number of deaths certified electronically from all causes is stable (vs. Week 30). There has been an increase in heat-related deaths, particularly among those aged 85 and older, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Brittany, Île-de-France, and Normandy regions.
