Status as of August 31, 2010

The Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS), which is part of the National Heat Wave Plan (PNC), has been at the seasonal watch level since June 1, 2010.

According to Météo-France’s analysis of the situation within the framework of this system, implemented by the InVS, no heat wave is expected in the coming days that would warrant the issuance of a health alert.

Closure of the 2010 Heat Wave and Health Alert System

Established in the summer of 2004 following the 2003 heat wave, the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS) is coordinated by the InVS in close collaboration with Météo-France and operates annually from June 1 to August 31. Integrated into the National Heat Wave Plan (PNC), it is based on the daily monitoring of meteorological and health indicators.

This summer, France experienced two significant heat waves:

  • on July 2, the PNC’s warning and action level was triggered for 24 hours in the Rhône (69) department;

  • from July 7 to 11, it was triggered in eight departments for varying durations depending on the department: Paris (75), Hauts-de-Seine (92), Seine-Saint-Denis (93), Val-de-Marne (94), Bas-Rhin (67), Haut-Rhin (68), Rhône (69), and Territoire-de-Belfort (90).

During these episodes, monitoring of health data (all-cause deaths, SAMU and SOS Médecins interventions, and emergency department visits for heat-related conditions) did not reveal a significant increase in these indicators.
