Perceived Deterioration in Health and Inequalities in Access to Healthcare in Guadeloupe: Vulnerable Individuals Are More Often Affected

Introduction – Guadeloupe faces a unique healthcare situation, characterized by a low density of healthcare professionals and unequal access to care across the territory. Furthermore, Guadeloupe’s population is aging, and the number of people living with chronic diseases continues to rise. Reducing inequalities in access to healthcare is a major public policy challenge, particularly in overseas territories. It is in this context that the Guadeloupe Regional Council commissioned the Guadeloupe Regional Health Observatory (Orsag) to conduct a study aimed at identifying the population’s needs regarding access to healthcare, as well as the measures that could be taken to improve these conditions.Method – Between November and December 2023, a telephone survey was conducted using a quota sample of the Guadeloupean population. Any adult permanently residing in Guadeloupe was eligible to participate. Results – A total of 400 Guadeloupeans were surveyed. Just over half of the respondents (56%) reported feeling in good or very good health. This proportion is lower among those with a monthly income of less than 1,000 euros (36%). In the 12 months prior to the survey, 85% had seen a general practitioner, 43% had seen a specialist, and 39% had seen another healthcare professional. Furthermore, 41% of people foregone medical care because they considered the wait time for an appointment to be too long. The majority of Guadeloupeans (60 to 70%) use their own personal transportation to get to a medical appointment, while 12% use public transit. Conclusion – The survey results show that Guadeloupeans’ perception of their health has worsened compared to previous studies. They highlight the difficulties the population faces in accessing care. These constraints lead to delays in diagnosis, health risks, and a sense of well-being. Appropriate public policies are needed to strengthen the availability of and access to healthcare, and to develop targeted initiatives for the most vulnerable populations.
