Accidents in Daily Life Leading to Hospital Care Among Children Aged 1 to 10: A Study of Associated Factors in the Elfe Cohort

Introduction – The objective is to describe everyday accidents (AcVC) requiring hospital care (emergency department visits alone or with hospitalization) among children aged 1 to 10 years in the Elfe cohort and to analyze the associated risk and protective factors. Methods – Data were collected from parents of 9,662 to 12,243 children at ages 2, 3, 5, and 10. The weighted average annual incidence rates were estimated by adjusting the sample to reflect the population of children born in France in 2011. The analysis of factors associated with severity was based on a multivariate multinomial logistic regression model. Results – The average annual incidence of AcVCs requiring hospitalization decreases with the child’s age (14.1% among 1- to 2-year-olds versus 9.2% among 5- to 10-year-olds). Falls, particularly those resulting in head trauma, are the most common types of accidents. Among the factors associated with hospitalization for a CVA, the following were identified for 2-year-olds: male sex (adjusted odds ratio of 1.79; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): [1.19–2.70]); for 3-year-olds: a parent’s mental health disorder (1.64 [1.00–2.68]) and male gender (1.58 [1.12–2.23]); for 5-year-olds: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (1.59 [1.00–2.51]); and for 10-year-olds: living in a large municipality other than Paris (1.55 [1.03–2.34]), having a high municipal social deprivation index (1.60 [1.09–2.37]), having parents with a chronic illness (1.46 [1.16–1.85]), a mental health disorder (1.34 [1.00–1.81]), or who use inconsistent discipline (5.37 [1.40–20.64]), participating in organized sports (1.65 [1.16–2.33]), and being male (1.42 [1.12–1.80]).Conclusion – While child-related factors are often well documented, the study shows that parents’ mental health, their parenting style, and community characteristics are also associated with hospital admissions for stroke.
