Key Points

Leptospirosis

  • Start of the seasonal leptospirosis outbreak.

  • Current weather conditions are favorable for the survival of the bacteria in the environment. The number of cases reported in January 2024 is higher than in previous years. And in 8 out of 10 cases, the patients resided in the southern part of the island.

Dengue

  • Circulation is on the rise in the south of the island.

  • Vigilance is advised given the optimal weather conditions for the vector and an ongoing outbreak in Mauritius.

COVID-19

  • COVID-19 viral circulation is stable and low.

  • In Week 5, the positivity rate (PR) for COVID-19 remained stable (11%) compared to the previous week. It is stable or declining across all age groups except for those over 75. In emergency departments, visits due to COVID-19 decreased moderately between Week 04 and Week 05, while the number of hospitalizations remained stable (and low).

Flu

  • No flu outbreak alert.

  • Indicators have been stable over the past three weeks.

  • In outpatient settings, however, there has been an increase in the proportion of cases due to acute respiratory infections (ARI).

Gastroenteritis

  • Post-gastroenteritis outbreak.

  • Surveillance indicators have been stable over the past three weeks.

Bronchiolitis

  • Reunion Island remains in the midst of a bronchiolitis epidemic.

  • The RSV positivity rate among children under 2 years of age was 44% in Week 05, with type A RSV being the predominant strain. However, emergency room visits and hospitalizations are on the decline. A transition to the post-epidemic phase is anticipated in Week 06/24.
