Public Health Bulletin on Tuberculosis in Occitanie. March 2022.

Key Points

  • The reporting rate declined in 2020 compared to 2019. With 5.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, this rate—though lower than the national average—ranks Occitanie third among metropolitan regions.

  • The reporting rate was nearly three times higher among men than among women, as in previous years

  • More than half of tuberculosis cases were among people aged 25 to 59, and less than 3% were children under 5.

  • The tuberculosis case rate among people born abroad has been trending upward for several years, particularly among those born in Sub-Saharan Africa, although in 2020, the proportion of cases who had arrived in France within the past two years was lower than in previous years.

  • The proportion of people living in group settings and the proportion of homeless people remained stable in 2020.

  • In 2020, nearly three-quarters of cases were pulmonary, a proportion stable compared to previous years

  • Disparities were observed among departments, with the highest standardized case rates for 2020 observed in three departments: Aude (8.3 per 100,000 inhabitants), Hérault (9.3 per 100,000 inhabitants), and Tarn-et-Garonne (10 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • The percentage of cases reported in the 2015–18 period with treatment completed 12 months after diagnosis of active tuberculosis was 80% and thus did not meet the WHO target of 85%.

  • The number of cases of MDR (multidrug-resistant, i.e., resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin) or RR (resistant to rifampicin alone) tuberculosis reported in Occitanie was 3 in 2020, representing 0.9% of all reported cases and 4.5% of MDR cases in France.
