Chikungunya, dengue, West Nile virus, and Zika in Occitanie. Update as of October 3, 2024.

Key Points

  • In Occitanie, from May 1 to October 1, 2024, 139 imported cases of dengue and 1 imported case of chikungunya were identified.

  • Four locally acquired cases of dengue were also identified: 2 in Hérault (including 1 new case in Vendargues) and 2 in Pyrénées-Orientales (with possible transmission in Lozère).

  • To limit the risk of local transmission, 184 entomological surveys and 147 vector control treatments were carried out in the vicinity of the cases.

  • Three local dengue outbreaks in Occitanie:

    • 1 (new) case in Hérault residing in Vendargues (date of onset of symptoms (DDS) on 09/08).

    • 1 case in Hérault residing in Montpellier with possible exposure in the town of Pérols (onset of symptoms on 06/17); with no new cases reported for 45 days, the outbreak is closed.

    • 2 intrafamilial cases in the Pyrénées-Orientales residing in the municipality of Baho with possible exposure in Florac, Lozère (onset of symptoms on 07/16 and 07/19); with no new cases reported for 45 days, the outbreak is closed.

  • The autochthonous case of dengue in the Gard residing in Aimargues reported in a previous PE has been invalidated following additional analyses conducted by the National Arbovirus Center.

  • Five locally acquired cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection have also been identified in Occitanie: 3 in Hérault, including 1 neuroinvasive case (1 new case in Restinclières, 1 in Baillargues, and 1 in Lattes), as well as 2 in Gard in Vauvert.
