Parental Hesitancy Toward Hepatitis B Vaccination in France: An Online Survey of 5,922 Parents, 2013.

The objective was to describe the attitudes and psychosocial determinants of hepatitis B vaccination among parents of children aged 1 to 16. A repeated-measure online survey of independent samples was conducted from 2012 to 2014 to monitor health indicators in the general population and their psychosocial determinants. Parents of at least one child aged 1 to 16 were asked about the vaccination status of each of their children. Parents reporting at least one unvaccinated child were classified based on their responses to all items exploring attitudes and psychosocial determinants of vaccination using principal component analysis followed by ascending hierarchical clustering. Among the 5,922 parents surveyed, 42.4% reported that all their children were vaccinated against hepatitis B, 31.3% reported that at least one of them was unvaccinated, and 26.4% were unsure whether all their children had been vaccinated. Among those with at least one unvaccinated child, three profiles were identified: 46.8% were skeptical of vaccination, 36.0% were opposed to it, and 17.2% were generally compliant. This study identified different profiles of parents for whom interventions regarding childhood hepatitis B vaccination need to be tailored.
