BCG Vaccination Coverage Among Children Born After the Mandatory Vaccination Requirement Was Lifted and Followed Up at Maternal and Child Health Clinics in France: 2009 National Survey

Objectives. The mandatory BCG vaccination requirement was replaced in July 2007 by a strong recommendation to vaccinate children most at risk of tuberculosis. We estimated BCG vaccination coverage (BCG-VC) per 1,000 children followed in maternal and child health centers (PMI) who were born after the vaccination requirement was lifted but for whom a vaccination recommendation remained in place. Method. This was a national stratified cross-sectional survey conducted across regions and involving two age groups. Due to the specific vaccination policy and the particularly high incidence in this region, the sample size was calculated to allow for a separate analysis in the Île-de-France (IDF) region. Children were selected through a two-stage random stratified sampling in IDF and a three-stage random stratified sampling outside IDF, and they were recruited as they presented for their checkup. Information was collected by the consulting physician using a structured questionnaire. Results. Among children targeted by the recommendation, BCG vaccination coverage was 89.8% (81.4–94.7) in IDF and 61.7% (53.8–69) outside IDF. In IDF, vaccination coverage among children with a vaccination criterion other than residing in IDF was 92.4%. Outside the IDF, children were vaccinated later on average than in the IDF (e.g., vaccination coverage at 3 months of age for children aged 2 to 12 months: 84% in the IDF, 42% outside the IDF). In both areas, children. (RA)
