Tuberculosis cases reported in France in 2012

The data presented in this article pertain to cases of active tuberculosis reported in France during 2012. The number of reported cases of active tuberculosis was 4,975 in 2012 in France, or 7.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The number of cases remained stable compared to 2011 (4,991 cases, a decrease of 0.3%). Epidemiological data show that, despite a low national incidence that has been declining for several decades, tuberculosis is not yet under control everywhere in France. As in previous years, case reporting rates remain higher in Île-de-France, French Guiana, and Mayotte, as well as among certain population groups, particularly people born abroad who have recently arrived in France. This highlights the importance of maintaining vigilance in tuberculosis control, particularly for these populations, to ensure proper case management and limit resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs. Finally, between 2000 and 2012, the tuberculosis case rate increased in metropolitan France (excluding Île-de-France) among children under 5 years of age. This situation therefore requires special attention, particularly in the context of insufficient BCG vaccination coverage, especially outside the Île-de-France region, and should encourage continued efforts to inform and raise awareness among physicians regarding the benefits and practice of BCG vaccination.
