The organization of tuberculosis control and the implementation of the tuberculosis control program in France.

The fight against tuberculosis in France has undergone significant changes over the past three years. These changes are aimed at strengthening the response in an epidemiological context where, over the years, the incidence of tuberculosis has steadily declined while disparities have widened. The government has recommitted itself directly through the recentralization of this mission in 2006, and a national tuberculosis control program was published in 2007. This initiative led to the suspension of mandatory BCG vaccination for children and adolescents in 2007, in favor of a recommendation for vaccination of at-risk children. This article provides a current overview of the fight against tuberculosis in France by outlining the missions of the Tuberculosis Control Centers and the main priorities of the tuberculosis control program. The implementation of the program is undeniably accompanied by strong involvement from those working in the fight against tuberculosis and an improvement in the system’s performance. It is, however, too early to judge its long-term impact. While challenges persist, particularly the existence of significant disparities, the fight against tuberculosis remains a public health priority. (R.A.)
