Preventing Falls Among Older Adults at Home: A French-Language Guide to Best Practices in Community Health.
Fall prevention is an effective, yet relatively complex, strategy for reducing disability among older adults. This article presents the results of an international French-speaking project aimed at facilitating the implementation of fall prevention interventions. A group of experts from France, Belgium, Quebec, and Switzerland was tasked with conducting a review of the scientific literature in this field and proposing recommendations for best practices. Their conclusions are based on a review of the literature, as well as an analysis of programs offered in the countries involved. The most effective fall prevention interventions are multi-component, addressing various risk factors simultaneously, and target the most vulnerable older adults. Identifying fall risk is a crucial step that allows the program to be tailored to the older adult’s profile. Three levels of intervention are proposed depending on whether the person has no risk, a moderate risk, or a high risk of falling. The dissemination of best practice recommendations should help increase the availability of fall prevention interventions, improve their quality, and encourage the evaluation of such programs.
