Survey on shisha (hookah) consumption in France in 2007.
Shisha or hookah has become a common form of tobacco use among young people in France. Methods - An online survey was conducted among young users to better understand their usage patterns as part of a broader study on shisha. Results - 326 responses were analyzed, 73.9% of which were from men, aged 21.2 ± 5.5 years, who had been using shisha for 2.6 years. Consumption is mostly occasional (60% between once a month and once a week), in the evening (87.2%), and on weekends (84.4%). The median duration of sessions is 40–49 minutes. Shisha is smoked in a shisha café (26%), at friends’ homes (26%), or at home (48%). Tobacco is purchased from a tobacco shop half the time. Only 39% of users believe that shisha is truly toxic. The mouthpiece is not changed and is shared with others (80% of cases). Discussion - While hookah bars are on the rise, the product’s toxicity is largely unknown. Only 1 in 10 users considers quitting, whereas 77% of cigarette smokers do. “Denormalization” is urgently needed ahead of the planned ban on smoking in bars. (R.A.)
