Perceptions and Consumption of Rolling Tobacco Among French Youth: An Exploratory Study
Background: Sales of rolling tobacco have increased in recent years in France, particularly among young people. However, few studies have been conducted to understand and explore this phenomenon. The aim of this article is to present the results of a qualitative survey conducted among young French people. Methods: In May–June 2016, 25 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with young RTT smokers (ages 18–25). The topics addressed included: how they began using HTPs, their motivations, barriers, and their perceptions of the product’s quality and harmfulness, among others. The interviews were fully transcribed and analyzed manually (thematic content analysis). Results: The reasons cited for switching from manufactured tobacco to HTPs were lower cost and peer influence. Other advantages were highlighted: the ability to customize one’s cigarette and consumption, the ritual of rolling a cigarette, which provides hedonism, enjoyment, and prolongs the pleasure of the cigarette break, the impression of smoking a more natural and less dangerous product, and the feeling of buying a pack that lasts longer. To a lesser extent, barriers such as the smell, the perception of greater danger and addiction, as well as the less aesthetic appearance, also emerged from these interviews. Conclusion: these specific perceptions and consumption patterns call for consideration of targeted prevention messages.
