SOS Médecins National Newsletter, January 18, 2021
Summary
In Week 02 (January 11–17, 2021), the second week after the start of the school year, total activity at SOS Médecins clinics continued to rise among children (+27%, or +3,949 visits) and declined among adults (-6%, or -2,716 visits).
In Week 02, after two consecutive weeks of increases, medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups remained stable, with 2,718 procedures recorded (vs. 2,749 procedures in Week 01, a decrease of 1%) and a share of 4.5% of total activity across all age groups (vs. 4.6% in Week 01). By age group, these procedures saw a sharp increase among 2- to 14-year-olds (+54%, or +135 procedures), remain stable among children under 2 years old (24 cases vs. 23 cases in S01) and those aged 75 and older (195 cases vs. 194 cases in S01), and are down among those aged 15–74 (-8%, or -175 cases). Suspected COVID-19 is the 7th most common diagnosis among 2- to 14-year-olds and the 4th most common among 15- to 74-year-olds. Medical procedures for suspected COVID-19 are stable or declining in most regions, with the exception of Centre-Val-de-Loire (+44%, or +28 procedures), Pays-de-la-Loire (+14%, or +20 procedures), PACA (+11%, or +35 procedures), Occitanie (+10%, or +13 procedures), and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+7%, or +22 procedures). Since the start of surveillance, 168,218 procedures for suspected COVID-19 have been performed.
Among children, nearly all indicators (for seasonal and most common conditions) are on the rise, ranging from +44% (ENT) to 133% (asthma attacks) for respiratory conditions, and from +13% (vomiting) to +33% (gastroenteritis) for gastrointestinal conditions. The volume of care for most of these conditions is returning to levels close to those observed in previous years.
Among those aged 15–74, procedures for gastroenteritis are up slightly (+8%). Also worth noting is a 12% increase in procedures for anxiety among those aged 75 and older, though the absolute number remains low (+25 procedures).
