Summary

In week 38 (September 17–23), total emergency department activity rose slightly among children (+3.7%, or +3,479 visits), while hospitalizations following visits decreased by 5%. Total activity and hospitalizations following visits remained stable among adults.

Among nonspecific indicators, visits for asthma increased among those aged 15–74 (+13%, or +129 visits), while they decreased for the first time since the start of the school year among children (-14%). A slight increase in visits for dehydration was noted among those aged 75 and older (+25%, or +45 visits).

Among seasonal indicators, there was an increase in visits for chickenpox (+116%, or +44 visits) and conjunctivitis (+8%, or +15 visits) among children aged 2–14.

Among the most common conditions, the increase in visits for ENT infections among children under 15 years old (+21%) and for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years old (+32%) continues.Among adults, there was a 7% increase in visits for anxiety disorders among those aged 15–74, and for pneumonia (+13.4%) and dyspnea/respiratory failure (+9%) among those aged 75 and older.
