Key Points

  • In week 37 (September 9–15, 2024), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following visits rose sharply among children (up 18%, or 12,766 visits, and up 22%, or 1,593 hospitalizations, respectively). Visits and hospitalizations following visits remained stable among adults.

  • During the second week of the new school year, the overall increase in activity among children was primarily driven by respiratory conditions and trauma. Thus, the sharp rise in visits for asthma attacks continued among children (+126%, or +2,828 visits), with a share of activity (6.7%) that significantly exceeded that of previous years for the same period.

  • There was also an increase in visits for ENT conditions (+52%, or +2,898 visits), cough (+32%, or +271 visits), suspected COVID-19 (+22%, or +89 visits), and, among children under 2 years of age, bronchiolitis (+100%, or +313 visits). The levels observed for these indicators remain comparable to those of previous years.

  • Among other indicators showing an increase in children aged 2–14, visits for trauma (+17%, or +3,316 visits) and abdominal pain (+12%, or +276 visits) stand out.

  • Among adults, there was an increase in visits:

    • among those aged 15–74, for asthma attacks (+43%, or +521 visits), with a higher proportion of cases than in previous years, and suspected COVID-19 (+23.5%, or +284 visits),

    • among those aged 75 and older, for trauma (+24%, or +745 visits), stroke (+7%, or +101 visits), and cardiac decompensation (+9%, or +109 visits).
