Summary

In week 40 (October 1–7), total emergency department activity remained stable across all age groups. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits rose slightly (+5%) among children under 2 years of age and adults aged 75 and older.

Among nonspecific indicators, increases were observed among children under 2 years of age and adults aged 75 and older. In these two age groups, there was an increase in visits for vomiting (+13%, or +91 visits), asthma (+12%, or +61 visits), and malaise (+21%, or +28 visits) exclusively among children under 2 years of age.

Among seasonal indicators, there was an increase in respiratory tract conditions across all age groups, particularly pneumonia (+6%, or +191 visits). Additionally, there was an increase in visits for gastroenteritis among children aged 2–14 (+8%, or +101 visits) and infectious conjunctivitis among children under 2 (+14%).

Among the most common conditions, there was an increase in visits for abdominal pain (+9%) among children under 2 and adults aged 75 and older, cardiac decompensation (+19%), and dyspnea/respiratory failure (+14%) among adults aged 75 and older.
