OSCOUR National Newsletter, November 15, 2022

Key Points

  • In Week 45 (November 7–13, 2022), with the start of the school year, emergency room visits and hospitalizations increased among 2- to 14-year-olds (+12%, or +7,195 visits), decreased among children under 2 (-16%, or –5,837 visits), and remained stable among adults.

  • Changes in these indicators are heavily influenced by school breaks and the return from All Saints’ Day vacation. After several weeks of a sharp increase in visits for respiratory conditions, visits have stabilized or even decreased across all age groups but remain at levels higher than those observed in previous years, particularly for bronchiolitis, acute bronchitis, and pneumonia in children (notably the proportion of these conditions among all-cause hospitalizations, which continues to rise for acute bronchitis).

  • A few rare increases are observed: asthma attacks among 2- to 14-year-olds (+12%, or +217 visits), influenza/flu-like illness among those under 15 (+11%, or +29 visits), and pneumonia among those aged 75 and older (+11%, or +222 visits).

  • The decline in visits across all age groups for suspected COVID-19 (-7%, or -212 visits) continues, driven by adults (-8%, or -230 visits), while, with the start of the school year, we observe a first week of increase in low numbers among children (+10%, or +18 visits).

  • Visits for trauma are on the rise among 2- to 14-year-olds (+35%, or +5,183 visits).Regarding mental health, there has been an increase in suicidal acts among adults aged 15–45 (+10%, or +111 visits) and children (+49%, or +50 visits), though at levels lower than those observed during the same period last year.
