Key Points

In Week 21 (May 23–29, 2022), emergency department visits remained stable across all age groups, with the exception of children aged 2–14, where a slight decrease was observed (-9%, -6,299 visits).

For the sixth consecutive week, Week 21 saw a decrease in visits due to suspected COVID-19 across all age groups (1,436 vs. 1,915 visits, or -25% vs. -19% in Week 20). The share of activity is down slightly (0.5% vs. 0.6% in Week 20), as is the proportion of hospitalizations (39% vs. 41% in Week 20). At the regional level, emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 are down in most regions, with the exception of French Guiana (+29%), Grand-Est (+17%), and Mayotte (stable). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 794,778 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

Among other indicators, we observe:

  • visits for chickenpox are on the rise across all age groups (+59% among children, +38% among adults) and remain at a higher level than that observed in 2021 and 2020;

  • among children and adults, a decrease in visits related to environmental conditions: hyperthermia and heatstroke (-73%), dehydration (-27%), trauma, as well as asthma attacks (-5%) and allergies (-5%), except among those aged 75 and older; visits for insect bites remain stable.

  • Among children only: an increase in visits for ENT conditions (+16%);

  • Among those aged 15–74, an increase in visits for urinary tract infections (+10%).
