Summary

In week 20 (May 13–19, 2019), emergency department visits and subsequent hospitalizations rose slightly among children aged 2–14 (+6,090 visits, or +10%, and +358 hospitalizations, or +7%) and remained stable in other age groups.

For the past week, emergency department visits showed an increase primarily for: - insect bites (+28.3% across all ages, or +134 visits); - general malaise in children (+25%, or +142 visits) and adults (+6%, or +512 visits); - asthma and conjunctivitis among children aged 2–14 (up 12% and 10%, respectively, or 106 and 24 visits); - allergies among adults aged 15–74 (up 6%, or 80 visits); - viral meningitis in children aged 2–14 and adults (a total of 47 visits in S20 compared to 34 in S19). There was also a decrease in visits for chickenpox and measles across all age groups (down 18% and 48%, respectively).

Among the most common conditions, the main trends observed in children include an increase in visits for dermatological issues among those under 2 years old (+15%), as well as for injuries (+13%) and abdominal pain (+13%) among those aged 2–14.
