Summary

  • Emergency room visits and hospitalizations for all causes are declining among children under 2 years of age (a 9% decrease in visits and a 6% decrease in hospitalizations) and increasing among children aged 2–14 (an 8% increase in visits and a 7% increase in hospitalizations). They remain stable among adults.

  • The decline in visits and hospitalizations for influenza continues across all age groups (down 35% and 59%, respectively, for all ages). In particular, the proportion of hospitalizations among influenza-related visits has returned to normal levels.

  • There has been an increase in visits for asthma among children aged 2–14 (+16%) and adults (+4%).

  • Other seasonal conditions are declining across all age groups. However, there is a slight increase in hospitalizations following visits for gastroenteritis and pneumonia among children under 15 years of age (8% and 7%, respectively).

  • Also worth noting among children is the continued rise in visits for trauma (+9%) and nonspecific abdominal pain (+19%), as well as an increase in visits for malaise (+13%). There is also an increase in visits for neurological disorders (+24%) among children aged 2–14, for anxiety disorders (+6%) among adults aged 15–74, and for nonspecific abdominal pain among people aged 75 and older (+6%).
