Key Points

  • In Week 11 (March 11–17, 2024), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following emergency department visits increased among 2- to 14-year-olds (up 14% and 7%, respectively, or 8,227 visits and 401 hospitalizations, a more pronounced increase than in Week 10: up 8% and 5%, respectively). They remained stable in other age groups.

  • With the resumption of school activities in all areas, an increase in most indicators is noted among children aged 2–14, particularly for:

    • Gastrointestinal conditions: abdominal pain (+17%, or 673 visits), gastroenteritis (+15%, or 298 visits), vomiting in children under 15 (+11%, or 155 visits, more pronounced in children under 2 but without an increase in visits for associated dehydration);

    • Trauma (+19%, or +3,665 visits);

    • Asthma attacks (+17%, or 337 more visits).

  • Across all age groups, visits for influenza/flu-like illness continued to decline (-17%, or -318 visits across all ages), as did other seasonal respiratory indicators, notably pneumonia, which saw a more pronounced decline among adults (-8%, or -453 visits).

  • Regarding mental health, there was an increase in visits for suicidal behavior among those under 15 and those aged 45–64 (up 26% and 7%, respectively, or 40 and 22 visits).
