Summary
In Week 11 (March 9–15, 2020), emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits decreased among adults aged 75 and older and children under 2 years of age (down 11% and 8%, or 5,299 and 1,575 visits, respectively) and remained stable in other age groups.
Among seasonal and non-specific indicators, there was an increase in visits related to respiratory conditions:
among 2- to 14-year-olds for pneumonia (+26%, or +88 visits),
among children under 15 and adults aged 15–74 for acute bronchitis (+19% and +12%, or +70 and +200 visits, with the number of hospitalizations doubling among children under 2 compared to last week (+10 hospitalizations) and asthma attacks (+23%, or +701 visits)
among those aged 15–74 for influenza/flu-like illness (+19%, or +509 visits)
Concurrently, there has been an increase in visits for isolated fever among those aged 15–74 and those aged 75 and older (+44% and +25%, or +664 and +94 visits, respectively). Note the inclusion of the “suspected coronavirus” indicator in the list of the 10 most common conditions.
