Summary

In week 24 (June 14–20, 2021), emergency department visits increased among children under 2 years of age (+11%, or 2,250 visits) and among those aged 15–74 (+5%, or 13,280 visits), and remained stable in other age groups. Hospitalizations following visits increased among children under 2 years of age (+8%, or 246 visits) and remained stable in all other age groups.

Visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups, as well as their share of total activity, continued to decline in all age groups (-28%), with 1,351 visits and a 0.4% share of activity, respectively (vs. 1,881 visits and 0.6% in S23). The proportion of hospitalizations following visits across all age groups is slightly down (48% vs. 51% in S23). At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are down in all regions, except in French Guiana (+31%, or +31 visits) and Corsica (+15%, or +4 visits). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 500,408 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.

The rise in seasonal indicators continues, particularly for hyperthermia and heatstroke (+59%, or +175 visits), insect bites (+29%, or +412 visits), and allergies (+12%, or +365 visits) across all age groups, as well as for chickenpox among children under 15 (+53%, or +136 visits). Also linked to weather conditions, there was an increase in visits for isolated fever among children under 15 (+20%, or +582 visits), for malaise (+10%, or +1,236 visits), and for dehydration (+32%, or +149 visits) across all age groups. Visits for asthma were also on the rise among adults (+53%, or +548 visits), with peaks observed during severe thunderstorms in several regions (Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France, Grand-Est, Normandy, and Centre-Val-de-Loire), primarily affecting children and adults aged 15–44.
