OSCOUR National Newsletter, June 12, 2018
Summary
In Week 23 (June 4–10), emergency room visits and hospitalizations for all causes remained stable across all age groups.
Emergency room visits were stable or declining for most seasonal conditions. However, there was an increase in visits for insect bites across all age groups except for those aged 2–14 (+13%, +212 visits), allergies in children under 2 years of age, infectious conjunctivitis in adults, and viral meningitis in the 2–14 and 15–74 age groups (+50%, or +23 visits). Activity related to seasonal conditions is generally comparable to that of the past two years.
Among nonspecific indicators, there was an increase in visits for dehydration in children under 2 years old (+60%, +12 visits), with a rise in hospitalizations following the visit (+94%), and for isolated fever in children (+17%, +496 visits) and adults (+6%, +76 visits).
Among the most common conditions, we note an increase in visits for ENT infections (+9%, +617 visits) and for foreign bodies (+6%, +32) among children. An increase is also noted among adults aged 75 and older for abdominal pain (+10%, or +83 visits).
