Summary
In week 26 (June 24–30, 2019), total activity and hospitalizations following emergency department visits increased among children under 2 years of age (up 12%, or 2,206 visits, and up 12%, or 294 hospitalizations) and among those over 75 years of age (up 4%, or 2,055 visits, and up 7%, or 1,224 hospitalizations). These indicators are stable among those aged 15–74 and declining among those aged 2–14.
Over the past week, seasonal indicators related to the heat wave have risen sharply across all age groups:
hyperthermia and heatstroke (+732%, or +1,705 visits),
dehydration (+189%, or +809 visits),
isolated fever (+14%, or +1,374 visits), more pronounced among children, and general malaise more pronounced among those aged 15–74 (+34%, or +2,222 visits).
Other indicators on the rise include insect bites across all age groups (+67%), conjunctivitis in children under 15 (+31%), as well as allergies and chickenpox in children under 15 (up 27% and 31%, respectively) and those aged 15–74 (up 16% and 20%, respectively).
Among the most common conditions, the increase in visits for vomiting (+47%) and gastroenteritis (+13%) stands out in children. Across all age groups, there was an increase in ENT infections (+15%) and skin conditions (+29%).
